Everybody these days is looking for ways to save money, no matter how much they actually make (or don’t make). With that in mind, we put together a list of 7 money hacks that you can start using right away to save money on everything from monthly bills to entertainment, food and gasoline. Enjoy.
Hack 1) Transfer a small amount of money weekly to your savings account, automatically. If you think about it, unless you’re really living on the edge, financially speaking, having $20 or $30 a week automatically deposited into your savings account shouldn’t stress you financially and, at the end of the year, can add up to a substantial amount of money.
Hack 2) Cancel your catalog subscription. Here’s the thing; whenever a shiny new catalog arrives, with dozens of pages of shiny new things that make you drool like Pavlov’s dog, you make purchases that you don’t need. Get rid of that temptation by canceling your catalog subscription.
Hack 3) Use the 30 day waiting list technique. Many people are starting to use this simple technique, where they write down what they want to purchase and wait for 30 days before buying it. At the end of that 30 day period, if you still want it as badly as you did a month ago, you can purchase it. Most likely that urge will be gone however.
Hack 4) Take really good care of your health. Yes, for many of us having to do exercise of any kind sucks. Eating healthy, watching your fat intake and easing up on the alcohol also aren’t all that much fun either, but once you hit 40, 50, 60 and 70 years old (or older!) the effects of all of those bad habits will definitely catch up to you. Staying healthy now will definitely pay off later, and significantly lower your health costs.
Hack 5) Use the library. If you still read books or magazines, watch movies on DVD, what to get coupons from your local newspaper and even get some free entertainment for your small kids, the library is the best place to go. You can do all of that and more absolutely free, and there’s no better price than free.
Hack 6) Entertain yourself at home. Be honest, once you go out you start spending money on everything. Food, drinks, clothing, more drinks. If you go to the mall your goose is really cooked! Staying home and entertaining yourself there will definitely cut down on costs and those nasty impulse purchases.
Hack 7) When possible, barter for the goods and services you need. Way back before money was even invented the barter system was used almost exclusively throughout the world. These days its a lost art, but the opportunities to barter are still available. Whatever your expertise is, offer that in exchange for goods are services that you need. In many cases you will not only save money but also get better services.
Hack 8) Use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas station in town. It’s free and shows you where the cheapest price on gas is on any given day.
