Save Money When Buying Furniture

February 28, 2012 9 Comments

When it comes to buying furniture, there are many ways to not only save money, but to buy furniture that is attractive and useful.

Before buying furniture, it is important to decide what kind of furniture you need and how much you can afford. One tip that has helped many throughout the years is to be professional and kind with the salesperson. By showing respect and kindness to the salesperson, you will most likely get better deals. Next, be sure to buy furniture that is on sale. It helps to look for sales such as clearance sales, closeout sales or floor samples. Some have found that July and the end of December good months to buy furniture because that is when they want to get rid of the inventory and make room for new furniture.

Another helpful tip when buying furniture is to shop at clearance centers and outlet centers. At these locations you will find good deals because some of the furniture has been damaged, returned or not used anymore and the company wants to get the furniture out and bring in other types of furniture.Find a furniture store when you can negotiate the price. Some furniture stores will negotiate or combine several pieces of furniture together and give you a deal for all of the pieces. Then, find out what the Internet has to offer. There are many good deals online and all you have to do is check out what kind of deals are available. To make your online search easy and effective, look for the name of the manufacturer and the style and model you are looking for. Always check the shipping information, taxes and warranties before you make a decision to buy.Buying used furniture can also be a great way to buy furniture. Used furniture can be found at garage sales, estate sales, thrift stores and auctions. Used furniture can work well because you can save money, find one of a kind furniture and in most cases, bargain for great buys. Warehouse clubs, in most locations, have good furniture and offer discount prices. Other ways to save money on furniture are: buying the floor sample, buying colors and fabrics that are not popular and furniture that needs more maintenance. Many have found good furniture by buying patio furniture for the inside of their home. Patio furniture is cheaper, made well and some types of patio furniture blends well with other inside furniture. Some types of office furniture also looks good inside a home.

I used to buy the ultimate used furniture, antiques. I refinished it myself and it looks beautiful. Our upholstered furniture is high quality and lasts for decades. I have been married for 43 years and only owned 4 couches.

Agree with KrantCents on this one – restored antiques work out cheaper and look stunning (and a comfortable as well).

Aaron: I completely agree with treating the salesperson with respect. This usually works in many situations beyond just furniture. I am also a frequenter of the outlets or clearance centers. However, I sometimes become discouraged when I have to settle on scratched or mis-matched sets. Regardless, the savings is worth the look! I hope I don’t get slaughtered for saying this, but one more way I save is that I also take advantage of the “0% interest” offers. If they’re willing to give me an interest free loan for 24 to 48 months, than why not?

Yeah, I believe the same goes when buying any other big investments such as a house or a car. I would say take the 0 interest if you can’t afford to pay it all right there.

Like most other things, I’ve found online shopping to be a lot cheaper than going to a store. The cost of freight is a little steep sometimes if you don’t live in a major centre, but it still usually works out to be a better deal.

Great tips, Aaron. 🙂 Luckily, I’m not going to be in the market for furniture for quite some time. Everything we have is working great and should last a long time, plus our place is so tiny I can’t fit anything else in.

One of my dreams is to buy used furniture, refinish it and then sell it. I think that would be a great business idea. It would be cool to find some nice antiques…
