Smoking is a terrible habit, but so is drying your delicates in the dryer and leaving your dirty dishes in the sink for hours at a time. Unfortunately, there is a lot more at stake once you decide that smoking is “ok”. Once you find it acceptable, it’s much more difficult to quit this destructive habit, as you find a plethora of reasons for why you don’t really need to quit.
However, it’s time to cut past the excuses and shock the system. Here are four practical and logical reasons for which everyone should quit smoking.
- Save Your Health
Obviously, the number one reason that you should quit smoking today is that it leads to the rapid deterioration of your health. Apart from an increased risk of throat and lung cancer, it puts you in the high-risk bracket for a number of other diseases like diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis, and COPD/emphysema. This should speak especially loudly to those who don’t have good health insurance to cover the high cost of treatment. If you wouldn’t wish these health problems on your loved ones, why do you expose yourself to them?
- Save Money
Cigarettes are expensive, especially when smoking is part of your daily routine. Depending on the brand and amount you smoke, you could be spending anywhere from $6 to $12 per pack on cigarettes alone. If you smoke more than a pack a day, this could add up to more than $720 a month! This equals some peoples’ mortgage payments and at the end you have nothing to show for it. In addition to that, there are also indirect costs such as paying for smoking-induced diseases, a drop in productivity due to going out for smoke breaks, and any measures you use to try to cover up this destructive habit, like air fresheners, mints, or excessive dry cleaning.
- Look Better
Whether you admit to it or not, you do spend money on your outwardly appearance. Whether it’s buying clothes appropriate to your workplace, regularly getting haircuts or spending money on cosmetics, we invest into how we look and want to be seen. Smoking is counteractive to being physically attractive since it negatively impacts the state of your hair and nails making them thin and brittle, stains your hands and teeth, and gives your skin a muddled appearance. Once you stop, you will see a vast improvement in these areas, though you might want to consider teeth whitening beyond natural tooth shade, depending on the definition used, to remove some of the tough stains which years of smoking left on your teeth.
- Feel Better
Looking good is great, but feeling good is even better! Smokers have a smaller lung capacity than the average person, meaning that they will get out of breath quicker, feeling out of shape. They also suffer from lower energy levels, poor circulation which keeps their fingers and toes cold, and damaged taste buds. Start to feel alive again as you savor the flavors of your favorite dishes, increased energy while exercising, and you don’t feel as cold as you used to. You are perfectly able again.
Though not all of these reasons to quit smoking will seem important to you, chances are that a few will speak to you directly and hit you right where it hurts: whether it’s logic, your wallet, or your quality of life. In the end, why you quit doesn’t matter as much as the fact that you did indeed do it, and made a positive change that will affect you and your family.
